Photo Journalism

My Photo Journalism photo was one of the pictures that made me feel as if I where a reporter caught up in the heat of the moment. It was a Saturday afternoon and my sister and me were at a Starbucks. Fortunately my sister had her Canon Rebel on her because she had just come back from a photo shoot and we had decided to stop for some coffee. All of a sudden we see tons of people outside marching down the street. We realized it’s a no on prop 8 peaceful protests. I knew that this would be the perfect opportunity for my Photo Journalism picture. My sister gave me a camera and we both started running fro the crowd, we began shooting as many pictures as we could.  When we got back home we realized we took over a hundred pictures, all where very powerful images. I decided to use the one I chose because it shows how today’s youth stands up for what they believe in. This picture I believe shows how much we have changed as a society.

Obama Photoshop Project

I wanted to do something different with my Obama Photoshop Project. I knew that everyone would be making him look like a hero and glorify him through there Photoshop projects. I personally have nothing against our soon to be new president, I actually preferred him over John McCain. I had overheard people talking on how they where going to make Obama look “awesome” and do him a justice on there Photoshop projects. I didn’t want to do what everyone else was doing so I decided to take my project in a whole different direction. In my project I made him into an outlaw as if he were in the old west. I decided to make him an outlaw because outlaws are looked down upon in a society and are anything but praised. This is made my project go off into a whole other direction because it gives it a new perspective, which was what I was trying to accomplish through out my project.

Sarah Moon Photography Critique

Sarah Moon was born in France in 1941 where she studied painting and drawing in her earlier years. She then worked as a model in Paris and in London which seemed to influence her later work in life. Most of her work is with fashion photography, but she still manages to capture an essence with the work. This image in my opinion works well because of the way she uses her lighting. In the left side of the picture it starts fading to black which in my opinion makes the image very powerful. Also the blurriness adds to it because it makes it more interesting and catches your eye. I think that Sarah Moon is trying to show and unreal reality through this picture. An unreal reality in a way to show something that looks real but also looks like a dream at the same time, at least thats what I get from this picture. In my opinion I think that this is a successful photography. I think this because its interesting to look at and it keeps your attention and also catches your eye. I wouldn't want to change anything from this picture because every factor such as the lighting and shading make it stand out much more.

The Chernobyl Incident

Reflecting on my work throughout the album cover project, I've learned that simple ideas make the best ideas. At first I took very complicated shots that I put way too much thinking into. The result was a picture that looked forced and stiff. They appeared to be awkward most of the time, I eventually had no more shot ideas in mind. I then began taking pictures of simple things such as; trees, flowers, dirt patches, any pice of scenery that would catch my eye. The result was much more relaxed looking and seemed to have meaning. I decided to name my album cover "The Chernobyl Incident", to honer the victims of the Russian Chernobyl nuclear disaster of 1986. The scenery in my photography reminded me of when I first heard about the Incident, I had seen images in books of the the land turning to waste and dying out as a result of the nuclear fallout. My photograph made me feel as if I where seeing images of Chernobyl for the first time again, it captured an eerie feeling that I had felt when I had first heard about it. I am very pleased with my work and look forward to doing another project.

1st Photograph

Reflecting on my  work while photographing on tuesday i saw as a fun and positive experience. I got to interact with the camera and lighting effects which I tried getting creative with but was actually tougher that it looked. For me personally the part that was most time consuming was choosing the poses for my models. I didn't just want to do a simple cliche smile pose even though its what I ended up doing in the end for most of my pictures. My goal for my pictures was to get a sense of emotion through my pictures.  I think i was able to get some type of emotional poses for example, a confused and weirded out looking kind of face. Im hoping my pictures look good when they are developed, the whole lighting theory confused me so I was a bit nervous that my pictures would come out blurry. I also got to interact with new people which I thought was cool since i didn't know too much people in the class. Im looking forward to another shooting day since I now have a better understanding of how to use a camera and play with the lighting I feel pretty confident in myself.
